So, I hadn’t heard of this app before, but now that it’s not on the App Store I’m so sorry I missed it. Boyfriend Maker was a dating simulator from 36 You Games in which you could either talk or go shopping with your virtual boyfriend… and that’s it. I’m not making that up. Ultimately the player can create the perfect boyfriend by dressing him up in an outfit you created and unlocking various personality types. But all of that aside, the real gem here was chatting with the boyfriend. Which, apparently, was a third-party chat bot. For those unaware of what chat bots are like, go hang out in any IRC channel for about an hour. Essentially it’s a program that tries to understand what you type in and respond, it can very easily lead to some nonsensical speech. In fact, this bot got so egregiously bad that people started posting Tumblr pics of the worst offenders. At it’s worst it is sexist, racist, and offensive, whether that be intentional or not. I don’t dare post one of them here… okay maybe weird one:

Again, I’m so sorry I ever missed this. So far there has been no explanation on either 36You’s or Apple’s part as to why the app is gone. The current theory is that the app’s warning of the chat bot was not enough to offset the potentially offensive content to users. Should it ever return, I do believe a look at the game is in order.
