Plants vs. Zombies Top-Selling iPhone Game Launch Ever

February 26th, 2010 — 10:38am

This does NOT come as much of a surprize to me, but I think it’s a great sign of things to come from PopCap.  Clearly the iPhone represents a gold mine for them, and we will do nothing but benefit from the great content that flows from them on a regular basis.  Here is a clip:

And according to publisher PopCap Games, the $2.99 mobile zombie-zapper is officially a mega-hit, selling over 300,000 copies in just nine days. That’s a new record for the App Store, as is the game’s revenue haul of over $1 million in gross sales. The game hit number one in “units sold” and “top grossing” categories on Apple’s App Store charts inside 24 hours of launching on February 15, then managed to hold the top spot until yesterday.

Read the whole thing here. I say, viva la PopCap.

My new secret lover, “Space Miner: Space Ore Bust”

February 25th, 2010 — 9:57am

Honestly, just when you think there’s nothing new on the app store outside of a 100 new tower defense games, and 30 new duel stick zombie shooters, along comes something like “Space Miner“.

I’m completely enamored with this game, and feel it my mission to spread the word about what I consider one of the best hand held gaming experiences on any portable platform.

Sound like hype-filled praise? Yeah, a little. But I really love this game, and I think many of you will as well. Space Miner is part Asteroids, part EVE Online, part goofy adventure game, part RPG, and of course, part awesome. It doesn’t hurt that they are currently having a 60% off sale, putting the price at a easy to swallow $1.99.

Check out this trailer released for the game. You’ll get an idea of what the game is about.

The game ends up being so much more than it first appears. It’s deep, addicting, and incredibly polished. Here’s the iTunes link.

Now I need to get back to upgrading my reactor core. My final score?

Apple removes over 5000 apps from iPhone app store

February 22nd, 2010 — 1:14pm

Apple is causing a stir in the iPhone community by removing over 5000 apps from the app store due to what they deem as inappropriate content. Apple has long been known for being protective over what gets onto the app store, but never before have they rejected or removed so many apps at once. This recent course of action has caused Apple to receive a great deal of criticism from iPhone users, app developers, and the media.

Interesting move. We may have to chat about this on the show.

15 things that 4.0 MUST have on the iPhone

February 19th, 2010 — 1:30pm

By far, the most common request was for background processing so that third-party apps could run in the background, while other apps are running in the foreground. The idea is that this will make apps more useful, ranging from Internet radio apps that can keep streaming, to messaging apps that can keep receiving messages while you’re doing other stuff.

Interesting read. Check out the rest.
